Windshield Care and RepairWhen a snowstorm is predicted, the City of Calgary applies a combination of gravel and calcium-chloride for snow and ice control. While this mixture helps prevent dangerous buildup to reduce collisions, it can also leads to chips, pits and cracks in your windshield, which may impact its structural integrity. Depending on the type of damage, your windshield could pose a risk to your safety.

Your windshield must provide an unobstructed view of the road, and also acts as a component of the overall strength and structural integrity of your vehicle. Your windshield is one of your main protectors in an accident, which means it’s important to have any impairment inspected by a professional.

The Quarantine Restraints Cargo Net: Windshield Safety Tips

A cargo net from Quarantine Restraints not only keeps your load safe; it also helps prevent roadside litter, protecting the environment. Our high-quality exterior and interior cargo nets are comprised of durable, polyester mesh netting with a much tighter weave than a traditional cargo net to prevent roadside litter and accidents caused by debris falling from vehicles. Flying debris often causes windshield damage.

No vehicle is completely safe without a fully functioning windshield. While early automobile manufactures used common glass, technological developments have allowed windshields to evolve into strong, shatterproof protective shields.

How Windshield Repair Works

Modern windshields contain laminated glass with a with a non-glass inner layer to prevent shattering. When a windshield is repaired, a special resin is injected into the damaged area with a tool that attaches to the glass. Once dry, or cured, this resin can be polished on the outside, restoring much of the clarity and strength to the glass. Windshield repair won’t completely restore your glass to mint condition, but is often sufficient for small chips and cracks.

When is it Safe to Simply Repair Your Windshield?

To help you avoid an accident from roadside debris your windshield must be free of obstructions, so the location of damage is important. A specialist will be able to determine whether simply repairing your windshield is safe, or if you should consider an entire replacement.

Your windshield may be a good candidate for repair if it has the following types of damage:

  • Cracks in straight lines that are shorter than a dollar bill
  • Chips with cracks that look like a star burst (3 inches or less in diameter)
  • Chips that look like a bulls-eye (less than one inch in diameter)
  • Surface pits (with diameter under 1/8 inch)
  • Cracks that do not extend to the edge of the windshield (exceptions)

How to Prevent Further Damage From Occurring

Once a windshield is chipped or cracked, heat, wind and just general driving can worsen damage quickly. It’s important to get major damage repaired as soon as possible. Driving your vehicle causes vibration that can make the damage significantly worse.
